Five Game of Thrones Spin-Offs In Development – All We Know So Far

Five Game of Thrones Spin-Offs. What Do We Know?

There are five Game of Thrones spin-offs (George RR Martin likes to call them successor series) currently in development for HBO. Some of them are reportedly being set in Westeros, home to the Iron Throne. It seems various writers, including GRRM pitched their ideas and this is what we know as of now.

What Do We Know About These Five Game of Thrones Spin-Offs?

Back in May, Martin confirmed this news on his blog. Says Martin, “Every one of the concepts under discussion is a prequel, rather than a sequel”. Westeros may not even be a part of them. Other highlights include:

  • None of the five new shows will center on any current Game of Thrones character. The new shows will introduce entirely new characters from the Known World.
  • Martin is going to play a role in the creation of all five series, and one of them he pitched himself.
  • The five new shows are currently in development and we know the writers behind four of them: Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class), Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential), and Carly Wray (Mad Men)
  • The fifth writer is still a mystery.
  • None of the series will be about Robert’s Rebellion or adventures of Hot Pie (sadly). None of these spin-offs will be about Dunk and Egg.

What Have Other Writers Revealed So Far?

Aside from Martin’s blog post, we don’t know much about these five Game of Thrones spin-offs. One of the writers, Jane Goldman, recently told IGN that Thrones fans should recognize the material she’s adapting for her show:

“Yeah, I think I can say if I was able to say what mine was — yeah, I think as a book reader or as someone who watched the series, you would say, ‘Oh, that! OK.’ Yeah, it would be recognizable as a past event, but I think that’s probably as far as I can go.”

What can that be? The life of Bran the Builder? The Doom of Valyria perhaps? Or About the Children of the Forest and First Men?

One piece of good news is that Game of Thrones has teased a prequel on Game of Thrones animated history series and the clip features a part of the Targaryen conquest of Westeros. It will be made available with the release of Game of Thrones Season 7 DVD and Blu-Ray for limited edition starting Dec 12, 2017.

Game of Thrones Animated Series – The Targaryen Conquest of Westeros

Game of Thrones has mentioned the First Men, the Rhoynar and the Andals, the Children of the Forest so many times in the show. Just recently we saw the caves at the Dragonstone with paintings made by the Children of the Forest in The Spoils of War. History plays a big role in shaping up a nation, democracies, monarchies and even our day to day lives.

Game of Thrones is continuing their tradition of providing animated extras to keep giving viewers a flavor of the history of Westeros, following their coverage of Robert’s Rebellion (narrated by Ser Barristan Selmy a.k.a. Ian McElhinney) with one voiced by Viserys Targaryen himself, Harry Lloyd. This time they have come up with an animated video of Targaryen conquest of Westeros after the fall of Valyria.

It makes one wish that the series could actually bring the beauty of Valyria to life in the series. I mean, just look at the amazing buildings in the video.

The whole series “Game of Thrones Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms” comes out with a limited edition of DVD and Blu-Ray on December 12, 2017.
