Samwell Tarly: Most Likely To Find A Way To Defeat The Night King

Samwell Tarly is an unsung hero of Game of Thrones. When he came to the Night’s Watch as a recruit everyone thought that he is no good. But his intellect has carried him on in Game of Thrones. Judging by what he has been able to do so far there is a huge possibility that he will find a way to defeat the Night King.

Why Samwell Tarly Could Be The Person To Find A Way to Defeat the Night King

Samwell Tarly was recently at Citadel. His main purpose of going there was to study and find a way to defeat The Night King and his army of the dead. Sam has a track record of discovering things through his knowledge and love for books.

Way To Defeat The Night King

Samwell Tarly Trying To Convince The Archmaester About The Threat From White Walkers Advancing Towards The Wall

Sam Found Dragonglass and Its Use

Sam found dragonglass and a horn at the Fist of the First Men in Game of Thrones Season 2. He kept that stash with him before the White Walkers attacked the men of the Night’s Watch. On his way back to the Wall he rescued Gilly and her son from Craster’s Keep and killed a White Walker with dragonglass. He was the first one to discover that White Walkers can be killed with dragonglass. Later on, in the Citadel, he found that tons of dragonglass is sitting at Dragonstone, the power seat of the House Targaryen.

Defeat The Night King

Sam Tarly Finds Dragonglass and A Horn at The Fist of The First Men

Sam Found The Horn That Can Be Dragonbinder

According to Sam, the horn he found at The Fist of The First Men is the one that can be used to tear down the wall but in the books, there is another horn known as the dragonbinder. Euron Greyjoy has this horn at Kingsmoot and he tells the Iron Born that dragonbinder can be used to control dragons.

“That horn you heard I found amongst the smoking ruins that were Valyria, where no man has dared to walk but me. You heard its call, and felt its power. It is a dragon horn, bound with bands of red gold and Valyrian steel graven with enchantments. The dragonlords of old sounded such horns before the Doom devoured them. With this horn, ironmen, I can bind dragons to my will.”Euron Greyjoy at Kingsmoot

The Night King now has an undead dragon, Viserion, which has given him his own weapon of mass destruction. So this may be something that Sam will discover later on to use on Viserion and maybe this is not the horn that Sam thinks it is.

Sam Took Books And Scrolls From Citadel That Can Have Information On Defeating The Night King

The Night King

Sam and Gilly in Eastwatch

In a rant in the episode Eastwatch, Sam tells Gilly that the information to defeat the Night King is sitting and rotting somewhere on the shelves of the Citadel so he decides to take the matters into his own hands. Sam Tarly leaves the Citadel with a stash of scrolls and books which can help him in learning ways to ultimately defeat the Night King. He is capable of finding that information as he has found important information before by using his skills and his love for reading such as dragonglass sitting at Dragonstone and a cure to Jorah’s greyscale.

Also, Sam has the sword ‘Heartsbane‘ in his possession which is Valyrian steel. I am pretty sure that Heartbane will play a role in the Great War as well.

We have high hopes from Samwell Tarly. I am pretty sure that he will find a way to defeat the Night King.

Anatomy of The Frozen Lake Battle- Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 6 featured ‘The Frozen Lake Battle’ where a group of twelve people go for a hunt of a dead wight far north beyond the wall.

The crew discusses the making of this amazing sequence.

The Frozen Lake Battle

Says D. B. Weiss, “It was a real back and forth about who would be on this mission, who wouldn’t be on this missionThe Dirty Dozen obviously came to mind. Everybody has a good reason to hate everybody else.” We see Jon Snow, Tormund Giantsbane, Jorah Mormont, Gendry, Thoros of Myr, Beric Dondarrion, The Hound and five other wildings go on this suicide mission to rescue a dead wight to show to Cersei that the threat is real.

The Frozen Lake Battle

Suicide Squad

Some of the sequence was shot in Iceland. The crew worked in cold conditions as hell. Most of the heavy-lifting of the sequence, was in Wolf Hill Quarry in Belfast. The crew had a very hard time trying to work out what a frozen lake looks like, and how they can achieve that. And that went from compacted quarry floor to putting concrete down, to nice, flat finish, and then there had to be hues of color that were added to that. Then they had to work out how the ice would look, trying to make that look three-dimensional, and as if it was transparent ice. They worked hard to make the frozen lake look real.

Says Kit Harrington, “I think there’s a sort of kick-bollocks scrambleness to filming out here where you, you have such limited daylight. And you have conditions which are like this or worse. It just gives it a sense of reality, you know.”

The Frozen Lake Battle

Kit Harrington in Beyond The Wall

Remarks Emilia Clarke, “You know, the harder the challenge, the more I relish it. But this really, you’re like, “Can I just even maybe have, like, a screen with, like, clouds or something?” I’ve never flown on a dragon! And to just harness that power. I mean, can you even imagine?

In this sequence we got to see a wight polar bear, a dragon dying, hundreds and thousands of wights fighting with the Suicide Squad. I would say that the crew did an amazing job in filming this sequence.

Why Someone So Dear Had To Die On Game Of Thrones

Last night, Game of Thrones left me feeling sad. We lost Viserion, one of Daenerys’s dragons in yesterday’s episode. I was wondering why Viserion died? Did they really have to kill him? He meant so much to Daenerys, and to all the fans. Then, I heard D. B. Weiss and David Benioff’s take on it.

Why Viserion Had to Die?

Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss revealed that they have been building toward the death of Viserion, for quite some time now. “The whole path of the show in some way has been trying to map out all of the episode end points, and with this one, it was the dragon opening its blue eye, and realizing that the Night King has finally gotten his own weapon of mass destruction,” according to Benioff.

Viserion

Viserion Sinks Into A Lake Beyond The Wall

It seemed to me that killing of Viserion for Benioff and Weiss was just a purely mechanical thing. They build on it further in a cold manner. Says Weiss, ” What was fun about the sequence — in an awful way to us — is up until the end, it’s very close to one of those battles where all the good guys get out the other side more or less scot-free. But we knew that killing the dragon was going to have a tremendous emotional impact. Over the seasons and seasons of the show, it’s really been emphasized what they are to Dany. We knew the Night King would see and seize this opportunity.”

Viserion

When Daenerys Saw Viserion Dying

Yes, indeed the Night King saw that as an opportunity and revived Viserion. When the Night King touches Viserion his eye opens all turned blue. That was indeed chilling. Tyrion Lannister’s advice to bring a wight back to King’s Landing gave the Night King a weapon to tear down the Wall.

Viserion

Viserion Gets Revived By The Night King

Continues Weiss, “We like to think when the dragon dies, it’s kind of a one-two punch. On the one hand, you’ve just seen the horror of one of these three amazing beings like this in the world going under the water and not coming up again, and processing that. Then you’re processing something that’s even worse: when it comes back up from under the water again, and we see in the last shot of the episode what it becomes.”

But hey, there is something positive to look forward to. Jon and Daenerys are definitely closer to each other than before. Daenerys is going to need all the emotional support that she can get from Jon as she just lost her child. Not only that, Jon is going to need Daenerys to truly defeat the Night King when he tears down the wall with the help of his ice dragon Viserion.

Let’s see what happens in the season finale. I just hope that we don’t see more of our beloved Game of Thrones characters dying.

What Can Be The Top Moments of Beyond The Wall?

In the photos, we see the Suicide Squad, Jon Snow, Gendry, Beric Dondarrion, Thoros of Myr, The Hound, Jorah Mormont, Tormund, and a few wildings taking off on their excursion beyond the wall to capture a wight.

Beyond The Wall

The Warriors of the Long Night – Jon Snow, Jorah Mormont, Tormund, Beric Dondarrion, Thoros of Myr, Gendry, and The Hound

This was a brilliant idea of Tyrion Lannister to show to Cersei that the army of the dead exists and to get an armistice with Cersei. I would say it’s quite stupid and may be Tyrion’s biggest blunder. We see some bromance in the pictures between Tormund and Hound. What are they talking about? Maybe Brienne.

Beyond The Wall

Tormund and Hound Bromance

We also see Daenerys worried and talking to Tyrion in the pictures and in the preview. There is a huge possibility that Daenerys would have to fly her dragons beyond the wall to save the suicide squad. We may also see some Jon and Daenerys moments. Okay, so the wait is almost over. Join me live and until then check out Beyond The Wall preview.

What is Known About Ice Dragons

There has been a lot of speculation about seeing an ice dragon in the show Game of Thrones. Let’s see what we know about Ice Dragons from the books, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘.

What Do We Know About Ice Dragons?

There is some mention of ice dragons in the books of George RR Martin ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘. But ice dragons were first talked about by GRRM in a children’s story book called The Ice Dragon in 1980. They are said to have blue eyes, like White Walkers, and translucent wings. Ice Dragons are said to roam the Shivering Sea and the White Waste. These gorgeous yet terrifying beasts breathe cold, as opposed to fire. According to GRRM, they can even “freeze a man solid in half a heartbeat.”

Ice Dragons

Mentions in The Novels

A Clash of Kings

In the second novel, A Clash Of Kings, in the ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ series, GRRM refers to Ice Dragon constellation.

The Storm of Swords

A Dance With Dragons

The Difference Between Ice Dragons and Valyrian Dragons

In the encyclopedia, A World of Ice and Fire, ice dragons are a different species than Valyrian dragons. Ice dragons are much larger than Valyrian dragons. So what will happen if The Night King gets one of Daenerys’s dragons and revives it? Will it breathe ice like the ice dragons described by GRRM or will they breathe fire? That will be an interesting thing to watch although it will be very sad to see one of Dany’s dragons dying. A wight dragon might also give the Night King the magic he needs to tear down the Wall.

Why is Eastwatch by the Sea Important?

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 5 is named ‘Eastwatch’. Viewers and fans are wondering why is Eastwatch by the Sea important?

Eastwatch by the Sea – Relevance and History

Eastwatch by the Sea

Eastwatch by the Sea in the map of Westeros

Nights Watch mans Eastwatch by the Sea castle. It is located at the far eastern end of the wall. It also serves as a port, just like the Kings Landing, White Harbor, and Gulltown, on the eastern coast of the continent of Westeros. It is also the point where the Great Wall drops into an inlet of the Shivering Sea called the Bay of Seals. Right now, it is manned by Cottor Pyke, and also includes Borcas, head Stewart of Eastwatch, and Dareon, a newly made Stewart of Eastwatch as its residents. In short, Eastwatch by the Sea is the point where the wall meets the sea. Eastwatch is the closest castle to Hardhome, the Wildling village where Jon encountered the White Walker army in Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 8.

Mentions of Eastwatch by the Sea in Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones Season 1

Jeor Mormont tells Jon Snow that four wights in the snow were found by Cottor Pyke’s men near Eastwatch. Unlike the men at Castle Black, they had the sense to burn them. Dareon is assigned to the Stewards and is sent by Maester Aemon to Eastwatch.

Game of Thrones Season 2

Tyrion Lannister dumps Janos Slynt onto a boat headed for Eastwatch by the Sea.

Game of Thrones Season 3

When Jon Snow infiltrates the wildlings, he is asked by Orell that which of the nineteen castles along the Wall are still being manned by the Nights Watch. Jon replies that only Castle Black, Eastwatch by the Sea, and the Shadow Tower are still being manned.

Game of Thrones Season 5

Stannis Baratheon advises the recently elected Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow to appoint Alliser Thorne as commander of Eastwatch, during his stay at Castle Black. Jon, instead, appoints Alliser Thorne as the First Ranger in recognition of his service.

Game of Thrones Season 7

Dragonstone

Jon Snow, in the episode Dragonstone, asks that the Wildling army, now led by Tormund Giantsbane, head to Eastwatch by the Sea to stand as the first line of defense against the oncoming White Walkers.  The Hound also sees a terrifying vision while staring into a fire alongside Beric Dondarrion: “The Wall… It’s where the wall meets the sea. There’s a castle there. There’s a mountain, looks like an arrowhead. The dead are marching past, thousands of them.”

Eastwatch

That brings us to the upcoming episode of Game of Thrones Season 7. Eastwatch by the Sea is going to play a pivotal role in the fight between the army of the dead and the living. That will be the first face off between the Wildlings being led by Tormund Giantsbane and the army of the dead. Tormund is definitely going to need a lot of help soon. I just hope that Daenerys agrees soon to help Jon Snow with her dragons and Dothraki army.

Okay, so this was a history lesson for Eastwatch by the Sea. To catch up on what happened in episode 4 click here. Watch the preview of Eastwatch before the episode airs on HBO on Sunday at 9 pm EST.

Tyrion seems to be so torn between his love and worry for Jaime and the Lannisters and his pledge to serve Daenerys. He is definitely feeling some heat. He is also not happy about how Daenerys is treating him. Daenerys also warned Varys a few weeks ago about facing grave consequences if he ever betrays her. I think that someone is betraying her and Varys here is possibly trying to influence Tyrion against Daenerys.

Cave Paintings At Dragonstone: Their Meaning?

In the episode today, we saw several cave paintings at Dragonstone. Jon Snow takes Daenerys inside of a cave at Dragonstone. Remember, Daenerys gave permission to Jon to mine dragonglass beneath Dragonstone.

Possible Meaning of Cave Paintings at Dragonstone?

The cave looked like one of the French caves where prehistoric men lived and painted on the walls.

Cave Paintings at Dragonstone

Paintings by Children of the Forest at Dragonstone

However, in this case, it’s not prehistoric men in Westeros but the Children of the Forest who drew these paintings. According to D. B. Weiss and David Benioff, it’s supposed to be something that’s very evocative of the thousand of years that have passed since the caves were first explored and the paintings were first made. It is something that is also quite relevant to the current storyline because it’s about how the First Men and the Children of the Forest, two disparate peoples at war ultimately united to fight the common enemy.

Cave Paintings at Dragonstone

Paintings of the First Men by Children of the Forest

There are a number of symbols on the wall. Some of them are supposed to remind us of patterns we’ve seen before. Especially, the first two geometric patterns on the show which was a weird array of body parts that the White Walkers made. First one seems like the greek symbol phi.

Cave Paintings at Dragonstone

Geometric Pattern of Phi Made By White Walkers In The First Episode of Season 1

Cave Paintings in Dragonstone

Geometric Patterns of Phi and a Spiral By Children of The Forest

One of the things that one learns from these cave paintings is that White Walkers didn’t come up with those images. They derived them from their creators, the Children of the Forest.

Cave Paintings at Dragonstone

Another Geometric Pattern of Spiral of Body Parts by White Walkers

Cave Paintings at Dragonstone

A Spiral Painting by Children of the Forest at Dragonstone

These patterns must have had some mystical significance for the Children of the Forest. One can’t say what they signify but spiral patterns are important in a lot of cultures in our world and it makes sense that writers would want it to be important in the Westerosi culture as well.
