Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 6 featured ‘The Frozen Lake Battle’ where a group of twelve people go for a hunt of a dead wight far north beyond the wall.
The crew discusses the making of this amazing sequence.
The Frozen Lake Battle
Says D. B. Weiss, “It was a real back and forth about who would be on this mission, who wouldn’t be on this mission. The Dirty Dozen obviously came to mind. Everybody has a good reason to hate everybody else.” We see Jon Snow, Tormund Giantsbane, Jorah Mormont, Gendry, Thoros of Myr, Beric Dondarrion, The Hound and five other wildings go on this suicide mission to rescue a dead wight to show to Cersei that the threat is real.
Some of the sequence was shot in Iceland. The crew worked in cold conditions as hell. Most of the heavy-lifting of the sequence, was in Wolf Hill Quarry in Belfast. The crew had a very hard time trying to work out what a frozen lake looks like, and how they can achieve that. And that went from compacted quarry floor to putting concrete down, to nice, flat finish, and then there had to be hues of color that were added to that. Then they had to work out how the ice would look, trying to make that look three-dimensional, and as if it was transparent ice. They worked hard to make the frozen lake look real.
Says Kit Harrington, “I think there’s a sort of kick-bollocks scrambleness to filming out here where you, you have such limited daylight. And you have conditions which are like this or worse. It just gives it a sense of reality, you know.”
Remarks Emilia Clarke, “You know, the harder the challenge, the more I relish it. But this really, you’re like, “Can I just even maybe have, like, a screen with, like, clouds or something?” I’ve never flown on a dragon! And to just harness that power. I mean, can you even imagine?”
In this sequence we got to see a wight polar bear, a dragon dying, hundreds and thousands of wights fighting with the Suicide Squad. I would say that the crew did an amazing job in filming this sequence.
