There has been a lot of speculation about seeing an ice dragon in the show Game of Thrones. Let’s see what we know about Ice Dragons from the books, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘.
What Do We Know About Ice Dragons?
There is some mention of ice dragons in the books of George RR Martin ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘. But ice dragons were first talked about by GRRM in a children’s story book called The Ice Dragon in 1980. They are said to have blue eyes, like White Walkers, and translucent wings. Ice Dragons are said to roam the Shivering Sea and the White Waste. These gorgeous yet terrifying beasts breathe cold, as opposed to fire. According to GRRM, they can even “freeze a man solid in half a heartbeat.”
Mentions in The Novels
A Clash of Kings
In the second novel, A Clash Of Kings, in the ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ series, GRRM refers to Ice Dragon constellation.
The Storm of Swords
A Dance With Dragons
The Difference Between Ice Dragons and Valyrian Dragons
In the encyclopedia, A World of Ice and Fire, ice dragons are a different species than Valyrian dragons. Ice dragons are much larger than Valyrian dragons. So what will happen if The Night King gets one of Daenerys’s dragons and revives it? Will it breathe ice like the ice dragons described by GRRM or will they breathe fire? That will be an interesting thing to watch although it will be very sad to see one of Dany’s dragons dying. A wight dragon might also give the Night King the magic he needs to tear down the Wall.
