This Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones scored major points. There wasn’t any war scene or much violence but there were some important revelations. It looks like Game of Thrones gave a big clue to the viewers about the relationship of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Looks like that Jon Snow is after all the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

Mystery solved about Marriage of Lyanna Stark To Rhaegar Targaryen

Samwell Tarly is frustrated from his conversation with the Maesters in a scene earlier in the show. The Maesters are discussing the raven sent by Brandon Stark about Army of the Dead approaching the Wall. But Archmaester tries to dismiss the raven by calling it a ploy by Daenerys to drive armies of the Southerners to the north so that she could conquer Westeros. Archmaester also considers the slight possibility of the raven being true but says that is very unlikely that there is any army of the dead. Sam gets very frustrated about Archmaester not believing him when he says that he has seen the White Walkers. Sam ultimately gets dismissed by the Archmaester.

Sam is seen next in the episode with Gilly.

Sam and Gilly in Eastwatch

Gilly is reading some factoids from some High Septon Maynard. She asks Sam, “what does an annulment mean?“. Sam replies, “It’s when a man sets aside his lawful wife“. Gilly keeps on reading,  “Maynard issued an annulment for a Prince named Rhaegar and remarried him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne“. That’s it, folks! There you have it. So Prince Rhaegar is Rhaegar Targaryen. Maynard issued an annulment for the marriage of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell. Also, remember the Tower of Joy where Ned Stark found Lyanna Stark. That Tower of Joy is in Dorne. For all this time everyone thinks in Westeros that Lyanna Stark was killed by Rhaegar Targaryen and his army. But now it has become quite clear that Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark got married in Dorne by High Septon Maynard.

Samwell Tarly Misses Some Very Important Information

Sam Tarly completely missed what Gilly told him and instead starts his own rant about all the mundane tasks he has been assigned at Citadel and tells Gilly that he has had enough of it. Oh dear Samwell, you just missed something so important that could make your very dear friend Jon Snow a rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Not only that, this information is critical to the fact that Jon Snow can also ride a dragon. We need more dragon riders. You just listen to your lady, Sam. Listen to what your woman just told you. Pay attention!!!!

Jon Snow Has A Rightful Claim To The Iron Throne

Jon Snow has heard insults throughout his life of being the bastard son of Ned Stark. Despite that, he has risen to a higher purpose, to fight for his people, and most importantly, to fight for the living. Now when he finds out that he is not a bastard but a legitimate child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark what is he gonna do? Get into the war of Game of Thrones or continue his mission to fight for the living. My guess is the latter.

Jon Snow once told Sansa that he doesn’t enjoy being the King of the North. He never wanted it but his people chose him. Imagine what would people ask him to do if they come to know that he is true ice and fire. He has both Stark and Targaryen blood running through his veins. He is actually the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, much more so than Daenerys Targaryen. Rhaegar Targaryen was the heir after Aerys Targaryen and going by idiotic patriarchal norms of the society, he has a more legitimate shot at the Iron Throne as compared to Daenerys.

How His Lineage Can Help Jon Snow In Fighting The Army Of The Dead

The song of ice and fire is ultimately not about fighting for the Iron Throne. It’s about the fight between living and dead. It’s about the prince or princess that was promised. Jon Snow has already risen to that occasion. He is off again to the far north with his squad to take a wight back to the South to make the likes of Cersei Lannister believe that White Walkers are real. That the Army of the Dead is real.

His lineage is going to play another important role. Once he comes to know that he has Targaryen blood, that will cement his confidence that he can ride a dragon. He already bonded with Drogon in Eastwatch. Dragons will play a role in the fight of the Long Night.

This bond and the knowledge of Jon Snow being a legitimate child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen will be crucial for him to ultimately defeat the Night King. Let’s see if we get to see the marriage of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen as a flashback in the upcoming episodes of Game of Thrones
